ADSR: attack, decay, sustain, release
amplitude: volume
anechoic: not having or producing echoes; sound-absorbent
attack: determines how long it takes for the envelope to reach its peak at the start of a note
contour: the overall shape of a melody, the pattern of "up" and "down" notes
decay: determines how long it takes for the envelope to decrease from it's peak to the sustain level
envelope: the shape of a sound changing over time
humpenscrump: crude musical instrument like a hurdy-gurdy
leitmotif: a short, constantly recurring musical phrase associated with a particular person, place, or idea
pitch: a psychological construct related both to the actual frequency of a particular tone and to its relative position in the musical scale
release: determines how long it takes for the envelope to decrease to its minimum level after the note is released
rhythm: the durations of a series of notes, and the way they group together into units
sustain: the envelope will stay at this level for as long as the note is held
tempo: the overall speed/pace of the piece
timbre: that which distinguishes one instrument from another, a kind of tonal color produced in part by overtones from the instrument's vibrations
tone: a discrete musical sound
zither: a musical instrument composed of a flat sound box with a range of strings stretched over it
